Washington Prepares To Host 2001 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Tournament
Jan. 12, 2001
The University of Washington is scheduled to host the 2001 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor tournament beginning Thursday, February 15th and concluding Sunday, February 18th. The tournament will be held at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center and the Seattle Tennis Club, both in Seattle, Wash.
Washington hosted this event in 1999 for the first time in school history. The Huskies had their highest ranked win ever when they upset No. 3 ranked Mississippi State 5-1 in the first round of competition. Washington went on to lose a heart-breaker in the quarterfinals to eventual champion UCLA 4-3. UCLA defeated Illinois 4-1 in the finals and captured its sixth overall title.
Leading the field this year will be defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Stanford. Other teams that will be competing are: No. 2 Tennessee, No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Texas A&M, No. 6 TCU, No. 7 Georgia, No. 8 Illinois, No. 9 Florida, No. 10 Virginia Commonwealth, No. 11 Mississippi, No. 12 Pepperdine, No. 19 San Diego State, No. 45 Oklahoma State, and No. 67 Princeton.
"It is a great experience for us as a team," said head coach Matt Anger. "But it's also great for the people of Seattle because they are coming to see the best players in college tennis. The teams are very competitive and the format makes for a lot of matches that go down to the wire. It gives the coaches a lot of gray hairs, but it is really fun."
