Nov. 6, 2010
SEATTLE - An all-purple final is set for the main singles draw at the PNW Intercollegiates, as sophomore Kyle McMorrow and senior Tobi Obenaus both won twice today at the Nordstrom Tennis Center to reach the final. All three Husky doubles teams also remain in the mix heading into the final day on Sunday.
McMorrow, the top seed in the tourney, started his day with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Oregon's Robin Cambier in the quarterfinals. He then had to take on his own teammate, senior Martin Kildahl, who had upset fourth-seeded Marius Cirstea of Idaho, 6-4, 6-3, earlier in the day. McMorrow advanced to the finals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over his teammate.
He will face off against Obenaus, the tourney's third seed. Obenaus overcame two Ducks on the day, beating Baptiste Faynot in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-2, and then taking out Alex Rovello, 6-3, 6-0, in the semifinals. Rovello had previously knocked out the No. 2 seed.
In the second singles flight, second-seeded freshman Max Manthou got his first singles action in the Nordstrom today, opening with a 6-0, 7-6 (3) win over Flavio Malagutti of Eastern Washington. He followed that up with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Portland's Justin Guay to move into the semifinals. Also reaching the semis in the Gold draw was junior Matt Stith. He handled Idaho's Jake Knox in the morning, 6-1, 6-2, then came back to beat Oregon's Aaron Clissold, 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
Stith and Manthou also advanced in the doubles draw, and could wind up playing four matches on Sunday if they continue to advance.
In the top doubles draw, McMorrow and senior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan had an 8-0 win over and Eastern Washington pair and Kildahl and Obenaus defeated Clissold and Faynot, 8-5.
The main men's final is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, following the main draw doubles semifinals and finals. The second flight singles semis will be the first matches on court at 8:30 a.m.
