Three Doubles Teams Reach Regional Quarters
Oct. 21, 2012
MORAGA, Calif. - All three of Washington's remaining doubles duos took another step closer to a potential ITA National Indoors bid, as the Huskies went 3-0 in the round of 16 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships. Sophomore Emmett Egger had his singles run ended in a tough three-setter.
The trio of doubles wins was highlighted by sophomores Jeff Hawke and Viktor Farkas upsetting the Santa Clara duo of John Lamble and Iya Osintsev. The Broncos are ranked 30th nationally, but Hawke and Farkas earned an 8-5 win to reach the quarters.
Seniors Kyle McMorrow and Marton Bots rolled to an 8-2 victory over Will Schumacher and Thai Tu of San Francisco, while Egger and junior Max Manthou pulled out a 9-7 win over Stanford's Jamin Ball and Daniel Ho. Washington and California each put three teams among the final eight in the doubles draw.
On the line at Regionals is a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships held next month in Flushing Meadows, New York, which only 16 teams qualify for.
Egger was also in the round of 16 for singles, but lost a three-setter to 112th-ranked John Morrissey of Stanford. Egger lost the first set, stayed alive with a second set win, but Morrissey closed out a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win.
For the second straight day, Nicholas Kamisar dominated his consolation singles match, as today he stopped Eduardo Bringold of Eastern Washington, 6-0, 6-1.
Two rounds of doubles will be played on Monday, taking it down to the last two teams.
