MORAGA, Calif. - Washington's three seeded men's tennis players advanced through to the round of 32 as play got underway at the ITA Northwest Regionals hosted by St. Mary's at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex. Today was the first day on court this year for many of the Dawgs, with five Huskies earning their first wins of the season.
Starting with a draw of over a hundred players from Washington, Oregon, and northern California, two rounds of singles play were held today to cut things down to 32 remaining players. Senior Kyle McMorrow, the top seed overall, had a first round bye and then defeated Portland's Ratan Gill, 6-2, 6-2 in his only match.
Also moving on was fourth-seeded senior Marton Bots, who also had a bye and then came back to beat Brett Bacharach of UC Davis, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Emmett Egger, seeded ninth, was the third recipient of a first round bye, and he then defeated Kent Andreason of Portland, 6-4, 7-6 (5) to advance.
Joining the three seeded Huskies moving on is sophomore Jeff Hawke, who posted identical scores in a pair of victories. First up he defeated Jack Schoebel of Gonzaga, 6-4, 7-5, and then repeated that line later in the day with a win over 17th-seeded Bernardo Saraiva of San Francisco.
Junior Max Manthou and sophomore Nicholas Kamisar each had dominant first round victories, but then both were edged in tight second round matches. Sophomore Viktor Farkas, another of the several No. 17 seeds, was also 1-1 on the day, dropping a second round tilt.
Redshirt freshman Dragos Puscalau, and true frosh Rishabh Raman and Nico Lunardi all made their official Husky debuts today. Raman tasted victory with a three-set win over San Francisco's Richard Bucalem, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, but he lost to 12th-seeded Jamin Ball of Stanford in the second round. Puscalau and Lunardi both fell short in their openers, and will look to get in the win column in consolation play.
The tournament continues through Tuesday, with doubles play beginning on Saturday.
