LOS ANGELES - In the first semifinal match of the NCAA Men's Tennis Region VIII Championships at UCLA's Los Angeles Tennis Center today, No. 19 ranked Washington defeated No. 21 UC Santa Barbara 4-2. With the victory, Washington improves to 15-6 overall and advances to the Regional Final where it will meet the winner of UCLA vs. Arizona State in a 1:00 p.m. match tomorrow (May 17). UCSB finishes the season with an 17-8 overall record. UCSB started the match by claiming the doubles point with victories on court Nos. 1 and 3. However, Washington rallied to tie the score at one apiece when Marius Lunde quickly defeated Daniel Rheydt 6-1, 6-0 on court No. 5. UCSB's Corey Guy put the Gauchos back on top when he took out Robert Kendrick 7-5, 6-3 on court No. 2. However, that was the only singles victory UCSB would claim as the Huskies won at the Nos. 3 and 6 courts, then clinched the match with a victory on court No. 1 where Eric Drew outlasted Jong-Min Lee 7-5, 7-5. The closeness of the match is even clearer given the fact that UCSB's Simon Shen had claimed the first set on court No. 4, 6-2, but UW's Sasha Rampazzo led in the second 5-4 when the match ended. Here are the position-by-position results:
