Competition resumes Saturday. April 25, 1998
OJAI, Calif. -- Junior Eric Drew, ranked 60th in the nation, defeated higher ranked players in the second and quarterfinal rounds to advance to the semifinals of the Pac-10 Tennis Singles Championships held in Ojai, Calif. Later in the day, Drew teamed up with Robert Kendrick to advance to the quarterfinals of the doubles championships.
The 60th-ranked Drew defeated Stanford's 11th-ranked Mike Bryan in the second-round 7-6, 6-3. Drew then avenged an earlier season loss to USC's George Bastl, defeating him 6-4 in the first set before Bastl retired in the second set leading 2-1. Drew's two victories today ups his record to 20-8 overall. He faces No. 28 Paul Goldstein of Stanford tomorrow morning in the semifinals at 9:30 a.m.
The doubles duo of Drew and Kendrick (18-6) are ranked 41st in the nation and defeated Arizona's Roland Kupka and Mike Mackay, 7-6, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinal round of the doubles championships. They face Stanford's seventh-ranked doubles team of the Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, tomorrow afternoon.
Three other Husky doubles teams competed this afternoon, only to bow out in the first round, respectively.
