UW Men's Tennis Defeats UCSB in Shoot Out

SEATTLE, WA -- The 40th-ranked Washington men's tennis team upset No. 24 UC Santa Barbara, 5-2, in the opening round of the Great Northwest Shoot Out. Washington faces Virginia Tech tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the Shoot Out championship. Freshman Robert Kendrick, ranked 23rd in the nation, defeated UCSB's Cory Guy in a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, in No. 1 singles action. Kendrick's record is now 15-4. Junior Eric Drew won his No. 2 singles match over Jong Min-Lee, 7-5, 6-1 to improve his record to 8-5. Andy Posavac and Jeremy Berman won their No. 3 and No. 6 matches, respectively. The Huskies got off to a quick start claiming the doubles point early by winning two of three doubles matches. Drew and Kendrick, ranked 19th in the nation, defeated Duncan and Guy in No. 1 doubles play to up their record to 10-2. In action earlier in the day, No. 29 Virginia Tech defeated No. 26 Tulsa, 4-3, to advance to the championship match against the Huskies. UC Santa Barbara faces Tulsa for third-place at 9:30 a.m. Both matches will be held in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
