USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship

Huskies Upset Third-Ranked Mississippi State

Washington's 18th-ranked men's tennis team, participating in its first USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship, upset third-ranked and third-seeded Mississippi State 5-1 in the Nordstrom Tennis Center, recording Washington's biggest win in the program's history. Washington improves its record to 6-2 and Mississippi State drops to 4-1.

The Huskies claimed the doubles point early heading in to singles play. Down 3-0 in the first set, third-ranked Robert Kendrick battled back to take the first set over Bulldog Conrad Hurter, 7-5. Kendrick easily won the second set 6-0 to clinch Washington's fourth point to claim the victory. Kendrick improves his record to 17-3 on the season.

"It is nice for us to breakthrough and get a win to move on," says head coach Matt Anger. "I'm impressed with the win and we came out and played hard. We get to enjoy it for a couple of hours but we have to come back tomorrow and get back to business. When Eric Drew and Robert Kendrick are both healthy, it is a little intimidating for the other team with our one-two punch. It is nice to have the third-ranked player play No. 2 singles."

Senior Eric Drew remains unbeaten with an 8-0 mark defeating Mississippi State's 88th-ranked Matt Ballay 7-5, 6-1 in No. 1 singles play. Andy Posavac, ranked 74th, won his 15th match of the season downing Matt Soto 6-3, 7-5 in No. 4 singles play.

Tomorrow night at 8 p.m., Washington faces either fifth-ranked UCLA or 10th-ranked Southern Methodist in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
