Richards Named Academic All-American

SEATTLE - The honors continue to roll in for junior forward Brent Richards. The Camas, Wash., native earned Third-Team ESPN Academic All-America honors as announced by CoSIDA today. This is the first Academic All-American honor for Richards who is a two-time Academic All-District VIII First-Team selection and a two-time Academic All-Pac-10 First-Team honoree. He carries a 3.74 GPA and was one of 11 student-athletes named to the Third-Team. Earlier this week, Richards earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors. He led the Huskies in scoring for the third-straight season with eight goals and five assists, including three game-winning goals. He was named to the All-Pac-10 Second-Team last season and earned Honorable Mention honors his freshman year. In Pac-10 games he ranked first in the conference in shots and shots per game, third in goals, fourth in points and points per game, fifth in goals per game and ninth in assists. Richards is the second-straight ESPN Academic All-American for head coach Dean Wurzberger and the fourth ever. Rylan Hawkins was named to the First-Team last season while Chris Eylander was on the Third-Team in 2004 and 2005 and Bryn Ritchie earned Second-Team honors in 2000 and 2001. "Brent had another great season for us on the field and his high level performance in his academics work shows what a special student-athlete he is," said Wurzberger. Junior defender Kofi Sarkodie of Akron was the Academic All-American of the Year for the University Division.
