SEATTLE - Fifth-year senior Stephen Fung and true freshmen Spencer Richey will battle for the starting goalkeeper position for the 2010 season. Both are smart, experienced players who will both be leaders on and off the field.

Fung (Honolulu, Hawai'i) redshirted his first season at UW in 2006 and as a freshman in 2007 earned the starting position when Rylan Hawkins went down with a season-ending injury. He played in 18 matches, starting 17 while being named the Huskies' Rookie of the Year. He played 1,637.15 minutes while making 55 saves, allowing 1.15 goals per game average and posting five shutouts.

As a sophomore in 2008, he shared time in the goal with Hawkins, starting in 11 matches while recording one shutout, 30 save and a 1.55 goals against average.

"We expect a big season from Stephen this fall and he will be one of the team leaders," said head coach Dean Wurzberger. "He is very popular with other players and as a fifth-year senior he has great confidence and leadership qualities. I think Stephen is hungry and determined to finish his Husky career on a high note and help to lead our program back to the NCAA tournament!"

Out of Bradenton Prep Academy in Seattle, Wash., Richey brings quite a resume into UW. He played club ball with Crossfire Premier and was a 2009 Parade and NSCAA All-American. He played with the U-17 National Team, participated in the 2009 FIFA U-17 Men's World Cup and played in the men's U-20 National Team Pool. He joined the Huskies back in January by enrolling early and was able to compete in the spring season.

"Talent, enthusiasm and great athleticism describes Spencer Richey," said Wurzberger. "Spencer has everything except D1 soccer playing experience. He played well for us in his spring games and we know we can win with him in goal. He will provide great depth in the goalkeeping position and will push for playing time this fall. The competition between Stephen and Spencer will bring the best out of both of them."

These two each played one half of the scrimmages against Simon Fraser and Seattle Pacific the last two weeks.
