Huskies Edge Falcons 1-0 Behind Tallman Header
Aug. 21, 2000 SEATTLE - Zac Tallman's header midway through the first half lifted the University of Washington over Seattle Pacific University 1-0 in an exhibition men's soccer game Monday night before a near-capacity crowd at Interbay Stadium.
Tallman rose inside the 6-yard box to meet Mark Hogenhout's leftwing corner kick and send it past SPU goalkeeper Adrian Cravalho in the 24th minute.
Washington is ranked No. 12 in the NCAA Division I coaches preseason poll while the Falcons are No. 11 among Div. II teams. The Huskies finished with a 17-13 edge in shots.
Twice the Falcons nearly pulled even, both on strikes by Dana Garner. With 33 minutes remaining, Garner (Sr., Mountlake Terrace, Wa.) unleashed a bending 30-yard shot which UW goalie Chad Olsen deflected wide. Olsen made seven saves to earn the shutout.
Less than two minutes later, Garner snapped a 20-yard shot which flashed just wide of the left post. His lofted 25-yard shot hit the top of the crossbar as the clock expired.
The Huskies' best chance for a second goal came with 24 minutes to go, when Benjamin Somoza smacked the left post with drive from 30 yards.
SPU begins the regular season at Sonoma State (Ca.) Saturday. Washington resumes preseason play Saturday when it hosts Seattle University 2:30.
