Huskies Fend Off UC Irvine, 3-2

October 23, 1998

SEATTLE--The Washington men's soccer team dominated UC Irvine in the shots category but only managed a 3-2 win over the Anteaters at Husky Soccer Stadium. UW improved to 12-2 overall and 4-1 in the MPSF, while UC Irvine dropped to 7-7 and 1-2.

Despite a 25-5 shot advantage, the Huskies were behind 43 minutes, as UCI's first shot of the day, a long one by Patrick Lee, looped over the head of UW goalkeeper Peter Van de Ven at 19:57 for a 1-0 lead.

Early in the second half, at 48:39, UCI's Mike Margeson was carded for the second time and was ejected from the game. Then at 63:00, UW's Matt Annis sent a cross that Rees Bettinger flicked to Kai Carroll, who punched it in to even the score. Six and a half minutes later, Bettinger found the back of the net himself with a solid shot into the lower left corner of the goal.

Bettinger struck again at 78:34, benefiting from great hustle by Viet Nguyen. Nguyen rushed UCI keeper Kevin Mehrens as he was clearing the ball and deflected it to Bettinger, who shot into an open goal.

But the Anteaters weren't finished. A lapse by UW allowed UCI's Oliver Zlomislic to head in Tyler Theslof's free kick at 88:20, causing a flurry of action in the last minute and a half.

"We played well enough to win, but I'm unpleased with our performance," UW coach Dean Wurzberger said. "You can see by the shot count that we dominated the game, but we didn't capitalize early on. We played well between the boxes but we didn't finish well. Conceding a goal at the end of the game is disappointing."
