CORVALLIS, Ore. - Washington men's soccer improved its unbeaten streak to six games with a 2-1 victory over Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore., Friday evening.

Freshman forward Brent Richards and junior midfielder Jo Jo Katz scored second-half goals for the Huskies in the 47th and 79th minutes, respectively. OSU used a goal from Robby Christner in the 85th minute to cut the UW lead to 2-1, but the Huskies held on for the victory.

The win improved Washington's overall record to 7-3-1 as the Huskies also remained unbeaten in Pac-10 play with a 2-0-1 league mark. The Beavers fell to 3-6-3 and 0-2-1 in conference play.

The Huskies outshot the Beavers 18-9 and finished with a 12-5 advantage on corner kicks. Three different UW players had three or more shots led by Richards who finished the match with four attempts on goal.

"It was a very good performance for us, we were very impressive tonight," UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said following the match. "This has been a tough place for us and that is the most dominating we've been down here in years, maybe since 2001. It was an extremely strong performance defensively and we dominated statistically. We had 12 corners so we kept pressure on them all game long and did the job in the end. I'm very proud of them."

Both teams played a scoreless first half despite the 8-5 UW advantage on shots. But it didn't take long after the intermission for the Huskies to get on the board when Richards scored his fifth goal of the season at 46:11, a shot assisted by freshman forward Dylan Tucker-Gangnes and senior midfielder Raphael Cox.

Then Katz helped UW add to its lead with his third goal of the season off a corner kick at 78:06. The Beavers tried to close in on a goal from Christner at 84:15 but the UW defense held strong the last five minutes of regulation to avoid a fourth-straight overtime game between these Northwest rivals.

UW sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Fung earned the victory, allowed the one goal and made one save. The Huskies forced OSU goalkeeper Steve Spangler to make seven saves.

The Huskies will continue their current road swing with matches in Southern California next weekend. UW will face UCLA on Friday, Oct. 17 (7 p.m.) and San Diego State on Sunday, Oct. 19 (12 p.m.).
