Two Late Goals Power Huskies Past Aztecs
Oct. 9, 2011
SEATTLE - Washington used Jacob Hustedt's penalty-kick score in the 86th minute, and a header from Casey McCool in the 79th minute to come back from a 2-1 deficit and edge visiting San Diego State. With the win, Washington moves to 6-3-2 on the year, and 1-2-0 in Pac-12 play.
Senior forward Brent Richards opened the day's scoring in the 40th minute off an assist from Michael Harris. The Dawgs took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but SDSU's Daniel Steres capitalized on a penalty kick and evened the score in the 66th minute. The Atecs then took the lead on Jordan Ongaro's fifth goal of the season, before UW's McCool and Hustedt crystalized the win for the Huskies with two goals in the final 11 minutes.
"It was an exciting game for everyone in attendance. When we didn't score a second goal, we left the window open. To San Diego State's credit they came back and had us on our heels, but our guys showed a lot of heart," UW head coach Jamie Clark said. "We relied on our seniors late in games because it means something more - they don't get another shot at it - and I thought Nick James and Dylan and Jake were the guys fighting and winning things for us."
Washington will travel to the bay area to face Stanford Friday and California Sunday.
