Men's Soccer Defeats Portland

Oct. 3, 1998

PORTLAND, Ore.--UW senior Hyeon Kang scored his first goal as a Husky in the 71st minute to break a 1-1 tie against Portland on Saturday, giving Washington a 2-1 win. UW improved to 8-1, while the Pilots dropped to 5-2-1.

Portland netted a goal just 7:29 into the game when Chris Brown pushed the ball under UW keeper Peter Van de Ven off an assist from Brian Winters nine yards from the goal. But the Huskies then held the Pilots scoreless the remainder of the game.

Washington sophomore Mike Casale finally put UW on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at 57:00, booting in a loose ball from 14 feet. Then sophomore Kia Carroll headed a cross to Kang, which Kang lobbed over the keeper from a dozen yards out.

Portland outshot UW 13-11, but the Huskies had two second-half goals disallowed for handball and offsides violations. Van de Ven made three saves for Washington, while UP keeper Brian Casola made four.
