September 25, 1998
SEATTLE, Wash. - Five different members of the Washington men's soccer team scored a goal on Friday against Wisconsin as the Huskies downed the Badgers, 5-1, on the first day of the NIKE Husky Classic. UW, ranked No. 1 in the nation, improved to 7-0, while Wisconsin fell to 2-6 on the season.
Washington will face Wake Forest on Sunday at 1 p.m., after Portland and Wisconsin tangle at 11 a.m. Today's match will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on Fox Sports Northwest on Monday at 3 p.m.
Senior Matt Annis got the ball rolling when he knocked a penalty kick past Badger keeper Tim Caprez at 25:46 after a Wisconsin foul in the box. Crisp passing by junior Wes Hart and sophomore Kia Carroll led to a goal by junior Rees Bettinger at 41:41. Hart's assist kept his streak alive in which he has recorded at least one assist each game.
Wisconsin came out after the break and netted a ball just six minutes into the second period, when Brian Doherty capitalized on a penalty kick after a UW hand ball in the box at 51:00.
Then Washington scored three goals in just over 11 minutes for their best offensive performance of the season. Sophomore Mike Casale one-touched a cross by Hart past the keeper at 61:19, with Annis feeding Hart in the middle. Hart then booted a ball into the lower right corner of the net at 64:27 after Nguyen dished off a great interior pass.
Senior defender Craig Waibel found the back of the net for the first time in his collegiate career, converting a penalty kick into a score at 72:32 to finish the scoring.
The Huskies led in shots (24-4), corner kicks (10-1) and fouls (24-17). Caprez had five saves to senior Peter Van de Ven's one. Junior transfer James Dickinson relieved Van de Ven in goal in the 79th minute.
"We created a lot of chances and it was good to see us finish them," Husky coach Dean Wurzberger said. "It was the first time we really finished our chances at home. It also allowed us to get a lot of guys on the field."
In the first game, Chris Brown led Portland (4-1-1) to a 3-0 blanking of Wake Forest (4-2-1), scoring the first two goals and assisting on the third. His first came at 18:13, heading in a pass from Brandon McNeil into the lower right corner of the goal. Brown struck again at 74:27, beating keeper Sean Conner one-on-one after receiving the ball from Ben Leedy. Ryan LeProwse put the ball through less than three minutes later at 77:10 on a breakaway goal.
