Men's Soccer Downs Loyola Marymount
September 11, 1998 SEATTLE -- Husky freshman Bryn Ritchies first collegiate goal came in the second period of sudden death overtime to give Washington a 2-1 win over Loyola Marymount in the second game of the MPSF-WCC Challenge. San Diego downed Oregon State by the same 2-1 margin in the first game. Loyola Marymount struck first after a quiet first half during which both teams combined for just four shots. At 70:53, Richard Gutierrez punched a loose ball from near the right endline past UW keeper Peter Van de Ven. Then at 79:58, the Lions knocked a cross from UWs Mike Casale into their own goal to tie the game. The 1-1 knot would remain through the first sudden death overtime period and well into the second despite several good looks at the goal by the Huskies. Ritchie missed a header off a corner halfway through the second overtime period, but he nailed his second at 112:04 to end the game. Junior Wes Hart had the assist. We obviously werent at our best, but we were playing against a team that went all out to defend us, UW coach Dean Wurzberger said. They put nine players behind the ball with just one forward, but we have to accept that. Its a challenge to beat a packed defense and we were just shy on our last pass or our shots. But when you leave a game like that as winners, you have to be pleased. UW dominated the Lions in every way but the score, with a 16-4 shot advantage and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Van de Ven had no saves, while Jerard Bailey made two for LMU. In the opening game, San Diego's Devin Ebright and Leighton OBrien combined for the Toreros two goals in the first half. The first came at 7:51, when Ebright knocked in an OBrien rebound. OBrien next benefited from an Ebright assist at 35:37, heading in a free kick. Oregon States Freddy Kummemes scored off a penalty kick at 81:12, but the Beavers could not tie the game. Both teams managed 11 shots and three corners.
