PORTLAND, Ore. - The Washington mens soccer team dominated George Mason in the opening game of the adidas Invitational at the University of Portland on Saturday, downing the Patriots 3-0.
Washington needed only 2:35 to get on the scoreboard for the first time. Junior midfielder Wes Hart sent a cross from the left side to an isolated Viet Nguyen, who headed the ball into the lower left corner of the goal. The Huskies almost scored two minutes later off a cross from junior forward Rees Bettinger to Hart.
UW struck again at 36:00 after several other near misses. Hart slid the ball past the keeper into the lower left corner after nice passing from sophomore Kai Carroll and Bettinger. At 52:31, senior Matt Annis booted a penalty kick over the keepers head after Bettinger was pulled down in the box for the final score of the game.
Washington outshot GMU 17-8. Senior Peter Van de Ven recorded his first complete game shutout, saving four shots. Patriot keeper Paul Marcoullier made 10 saves. GMU was called for 15 fouls to UWs 10 and had a 7-5 corner-kick advantage.
