Men's soccer wins, 2-1.

SEATTLE -- The Washington men's soccer team posted a win in the first Husky event of the 1998-99 season, downing Gonzaga 2-1 at the Husky Soccer Stadium. The game was the first of the year for both squads.

Senior midfielder Matt Annis scored both goals for the Huskies, matching his total for all of last season. His first came just 8:53 into the match on the first shot of the season for UW. Senior Hyeon Kang sent a cross from midfield about 20 feet out to Annis, who blasted the ball past GU keeper Josh Fouts from the right side of the box.

At 68:06, Annis struck again, this time one-touching a ball from junior midfielder Wes Hart and knocked it into the back of the net to the right of Fouts.

Gonzagas Brett Fink cut the margin at 77:37 when he one-touched an interior pass from Jason Kuska into the net, but the Bulldogs managed only one more shot during the game.

Washington outshot the Bulldogs 11-6 and posted 20 fouls to GUs 17 in the physical match. Husky keeper Peter Van de Ven played the full game and recorded two saves, while Fouts saved one ball in 90 minutes.

They were exactly as I expected--big, tough and physical, UW coach Dean Wurzberger said. We were never fully in charge, but we knew coming in wed have to scratch, claw and get results early. Im very pleased with the result. Its obviously not a finished product, but were on our way.
