Wurzberger on Bettinger: WASHINGTON 1997 (Sophomore): Had a more balanced attack, with eight goals and eight assists, after a 12-goal, two-assist freshman campaign...secured a spot on the MPSF Mountain Division first team for the second straight season... scored at least one point in 10 games...contributed to at least two goals in five games...half of his goals were game-winners: vs. Sacramento State, Wake Forest, Portland and Seattle Pacific...third on the team in points with 24...started 12 of the 19 games in which he played...earned a spot on Soccer America's Team of the Week for his efforts against Portland...began the season with one goal and two assists vs. North Carolina...earned adidas/Foot Locker most outstanding offensive player honors for that game...also landed a spot on the NIKE-Wake Forest all-tournament team...was invited to participate in the adidas Summer League but declined in order to attend a mission trip. 1996 (Freshman): Had one of the best seasons of any freshman in the nation...named to Soccer America's all-freshman team...one of only two freshmen named to the MPSF all-league team...led the team in goals (12) while starting just 11 of the 17 games in which he appeared...tied Jason Boyce as the team leader in scoring with 26 points...had three game-winning goals, against Wisconsin and in both matches against Oregon State...netted the first goal in a 3-1 win over UCLA in the NIKE Husky Classic championship game...tied for first in goals scored in the Mountain Division...named MPSF Player of the Week on Nov. 4 after scoring the first goal vs. St. Mary's and the game-winner vs. OSU...named to Soccer America's Team of the Week on Nov. 5...selected to the World University Team.
