UW Hosts Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational To Kick Off 2011-12

SEATTLE, Wash. -- With classes set to start at the University of Washington next Wednesday, the Huskies Men's Golf team will get a jump on the new school year by hosting the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational Monday through Tuesday. The two-day, 54 hole tournament will be played at Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton, Wash. and will feature some of the top teams on the west coast and beyond. Joining the host Huskies will be Brigham Young, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Long Beach State, Oregon, Oregon State, Pacific, Pepperdine, San Diego State, Santa Clara, SMU, Texas A&M, UC Davis, USC and Washington State. There will actually be two tournaments hosted at Golf Mountain on Monday and Tuesday. Five golfers from each team will compete on the Olympic Course, while individuals not counting towards the team scores will play on the Cascade course. Head Coach Matt Thurmond will use a lineup of Chris Williams, Charlie Hughes, Cheng-Tsung Pan, Trevor Simsby and Cory McElyea in the team tournament. Gerrit Chambers, Ty Chambers, Larry Iverson and Yifan Liu will compete as individuals. Tee times are scheduled to start at 7:30 both mornings, with continuous play on Monday. Washington is paired with Oregon, Oregon State and Washington State on Monday. The Olympic Course is a par 72, 7,124 yard track and has played host to previous events such as the 64th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in 2011, the NCAA Men's West Regional Golf Championship (2010, 2008), the Ping / Golf Week Invitational (2009) and the 81st U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship (2006). This year will mark the 11th playing of the Husky Invitational; the second year under sponsorship by Kikkor Golf.
