Hughes Shoots His Way Up Pacific Am Leaderboard
July 28, 2010
Leaderboard | Round Three Tee Times EUGENE, Ore. -- After two rounds of the 44th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship, there is a Husky golfer with British Columbia ties lingering at the top of the leaderboard -- but it might not be one of the UW golfer's you're accoustomed to thinking of. It is not 2010 Ben Hogan winner Nick Taylor from Abbottsford, B.C., who is absent from the tournament being held at Eugene Country Club. Nor is it 2009 Pac-10 Champion Darren Wallace from Langley, B.C., who is tied for 56th at +10. Sitting in second is Charlie Hughes of Maple Ridge, B.C., who jumped out of the gates with five birdies in a span of seven holes during his first nine. Hughes, who just completed a solid freshman season at Washington, was -6 overall at the turn and atop the leaderboard. In a tale of two nines, Hughes would lose three strokes in the second half of his round -- which were holes No. 1 through nine. He bogeyed both par 3's and a par four on the back and went birdieless to end at -2 for the day and 3-under overall (70-69-139) for the tournament. Hughes will enter the third round two strokes behind Andrew Putnam, a college All-American at Pepperdine and University Place, Wash. native. UW alum Derek Berg is tied for 40th at +7 overall at shooting a 4-over-par on Wednesday (74-75-149). Chris Williams also shot a 4-over 75 and is tied for 45th at +8 overall. Richard Lee is tied for 76th at +16 overall. Berg, Wallace and Lee also competed on three-man teams representing the 16 state and regional associations that make up the Pacific Coast Golf Association competing for the Morse Cup trophy. Berg came out victorious along with his Pacific Nortwest GA teammates Putnam and Cameron Peck who combined to shoot a 5-under 140 and win by three strokes. Wallace's Golf British Columbia team was third three strokes behind, while Lee's Washington State GA team ended up tied for eigth. The individuals will play 36 more holes to decide the individual medalist race. |
