Thurmond Wednesday Report | Mackenzie Leads Husky Trio In Canada

Husky coach Matt Thurmond is caddying for Nick Taylor this weekend at the PGA Tour's RBC Canadian Open at St. George's Golf and Country Club. He will check in during the tournament and provide inside information from Toronto this weekend. Here is his report after Thursday's action.

TORNONTO -- A great day started out appropriately when Nick's 110-yard shot found the cup for eagle on his first hole. He played very solidly through the eighth hole and then had a bit of a train wreck.

Trees and rough became much more familiar than he would like. He drained a very difficult 12-foot putt on hole 13 just to stay two-over. Great birdies on 14 and 15, a bad bogey on 16, a miracle birdie on 17, and a frustrating bogey on 18 added up to 71.

It was one of the strangest rounds of golf I've seen Nick play. He had some spectacular shots that brought huge roars from the Canadian crowd, and he had other shots that really hurt him. In the end, we didn't know if he turned a really bad round into a decent round, or a really good round into a disappointing round. Maybe tomorrow will answer that question. He is really excited to play better tomorrow.

After Nick's round Brock Mackenzie was teeing off. He bogeyed No. 2, but came back with birdies on No. 4 and 5 and a bogey on No. 6. Then he -- on the same stretch that doomed Nick -- caught fire.

Starting on hole 8 he went birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie to jump to five under. Then on 16 Brock hit one of the most beautiful iron shots I've ever seen. I think it was a 5-iron into the wind to a tucked pin. He cut it a little to get to the pin, but it was so pure the wind didn't touch it. In the air I was thinking, "that BMW is going to be his." It was the type of shot that few in the world other than Brock Mackenzie could ever execute like that.

Brock looked absolutely awesome today. He drove it in almost every fairway, hit nearly every green, and showed great skills rolling in the key putts. He walked with confidence and composure and looked like he has many big tournament wins in his future. I was thrilled to see him look so great.

I was unable to see any of Alex Prugh's 68 today. Tomorrow should be another great Husky day. Good scores would be great and another trip to Tim Horton's would make it even better. Of course, Tim Horton's can't measure up to Top Pots Doughnuts, but they're still pretty good.

Go Huskies!
