U.S. Amateur Men's Public Links Championship

MIDWAY, Utah - Washington golfer Cheng-Tsung Pan's run at the 87th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship came to an end on Thursday when he lost 1 up to Xander Schauffele in match play's Round of 32.

Pan, who just completed an All-American freshman season at Washington, golfed bogey free at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Utah, but Schauffele was equally strong. Neither golfer had larger than a one hole lead during the day and Pan, ranked 13th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, only led for one hole the entire match.

The turning point came on hole No. 15 when Schauffele, who competes for Long Beach State, broke a deadlock with a birdie on the par-four hole while Pan parred. Both golfers birdied No. 16 and scored par on the final two holes, giving the match to Schauffele.

Former UW assistant Alex Williams, who beat UW's Chris Williams, dropped a 6 and 5 decision to Anton Arboleda, ending the hopes of anyone from the state of Washington winning this year's Publinx title.
