July 11, 2012
U.S. Amateur Men's Public Links Championship MIDWAY, Utah - Cheng-Tsung Pan advanced to the match play round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship on Wednesday, while Chris Williams fell in the round of 64 to his former coach Alex Williams. Pan beat Shane Smith 3 and 2 in the first round to move on at Soldier Hollow Golf Course. Pan only trailed for one hole to Smith, who just completed his senior season at Illinois-Wesleyan. The match was squared through six holes before a Smith bogey on No. 7 gave Pan the lead, which he never relinquished. Pan extended his lead to 2up with a birdie on No. 10 and added another stroke advantage on No. 14 when he parred the hole and Smith bogeyed. Pan closed the match out when both golfers parred the 16th hole. Pan will face Xander Schauffele, the 2012 Big West Conference Freshman of the Year from Long Beach State, at 9:20 a.m. Chris Williams frustratingly saw a 2 up lead through 11 holes evaporate to Alex Williams. Alex birdied three holes down the stretch but a bogey on No. 15 by Chris turned the tides for good. Alex birdied No. 17 to end the match. In other amateur golf action, incoming UW freshman Tyler Salsbury dropped a 3 and 2 match to Oregon golfer Rak Cho in the round of 64 at the Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Championship at Wine Valley Golf Club. |
