Huskies Miss Out On Qualifying For U.S. Open
June 6, 2012
SEATTLE - Qualifying sectionals for the upcoming 2012 U.S. Open took place at several locations around the nation on Monday and Tuesday. When the dust settled, seven with Husky ties ended up falling short of advancing on to play at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. The sectional with the largest Husky presence took place at the Emerald Valley Golf Club on Monday. Chris Williams finished fourth at the sectional after shooting 1-under-par 141 in 36 holes of play, but only the top two advanced from the region. That honor went to Oregon head coach Casey Martin and Oregon State's Nick Sherwood. Williams will be a second alternate. Williams' teammates Cheng-Tsung Pan and Charlie Hughes both came up short in Eugene too. Pan finished +4 and Hughes +7. Former Huskies Darren Wallace and Derek Berg also finished out of the running. Wallace shot a first round 79 before withdrawing from the second round, while Berg ended up +5. In the Columbus sectional, current PGA Tour pro and former Husky Troy Kelly ended up 2 shots off the cutline, while fellow PGA pro Richard Lee missed a playoff by one stroke after ending up 5-under at the Memphis sectional. The 112th U.S. Open will be held June 14-17 at The Olympic Club. |
