Huskies Will Be Put To The Test At Bandon Dunes
March 7, 2013
BANDON, Ore. -- The Husky men's golf team, ranked third by Golfstat.com and fourth by Golfweek.com, puts several streaks on the line this weekend in the 2013 Bandon Dunes Championship at Old Macdonald Course on the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
The Huskies have started strong this spring with ties for first in each of their first two spring tournaments, putting them among the favorites in the 18-team field to win at Bandon.
Historically, Washington has played well at the Southern Oregon resort. UW was the 2011 team champion and tied for first in 2012 with Long Beach State, but loss on a scorecard tiebreaker. The Huskies also boast the last two tournament medalists on their roster: Chris Williams (2012) and Charlie Hughes (2011).
This year, the Huskies are joined by Colorado, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Long Beach State, Northern Colorado, Cal State Northridge Oregon, Pacific, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Southern Methodist University, UC Davis, UCLA, UMKC, UNC Wilmington, Utah Valley and Washington State.
Head Coach Matt Thurmond will have a lineup that includes Williams, Hughes, Cheng-Tsung Pan, Trevor Simsby and Jonathan Sanders. Larry Iverson, Chris Babcock and Tyler Salsbury will compete as individuals.
Williams remains the No. 1 ranked amateur player in the world, while Pan checks in at 8th. Among player rankings on Golfweek, Pan is third, Simsby 8th and Williams 26th.
Simsby is also second in the Palmer Cup team rankings.
Play for the tournament starts on Friday and runs through Sunday. Golfers will play 18 holes each day on the par-71, 6,902-yard Old Macdonald Course.
Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com and recaps can be found daily on GoHuskies.com.
