Men's Golf In San Diego For Second Spring Tournament
Feb. 12, 2012
CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The Husky men's golf team will play in their second tournament of the spring starting Monday at the San Diego Intercollegiate, Feb. 13-14. The 54-hole event will take place at the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif. and will be co-hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego. Once again, Matt Thurmond's squad will face a highly competitive field that includes several of the nation's top-ranked teams by Golfstat.com. Besides the fifth-ranked Huskies, others in the field include: Arizona State (56th), Augusta State (47th), Cal State San Marcos, Coastal Carolina, Lamar, Point Loma Nazarene, San Diego, San Diego State (23rd), Southern California (9th), Stanford (4th), Tennessee (48th), Texas-Arlington (51st), UCLA (3rd) and UC San Diego. Washington will go with the same lineup they used during their first spring tournament in Hawai'i: Chris Williams, Cheng-Tsung Pan, Charlie Hughes, Cory McElyea and Trevor Simsby. That group helped the Huskies finish seventh at Waikoloa's Kings' Course. Pan currently carries a 70.31 stroke average per round and Williams 70.38. Both averages would be better than the UW single-season record of 70.6 established by Brock Mackenzie in 2004. Williams is ranked 11th among collegians by Golfweek.com, while Pan is 36th. Both are also ranked in the R&A World Amateur top-10 rankings: Williams 6th, Pan 10th. |
