Men's Golf Hosts Husky Invitational
September 29, 1998
PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- Washington preseason all-America candidate Rob Rashell fired a second round 2-under par 70 to stand in third placed after the first day of competition at the Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Complex. The Husky team is in eighth place after two rounds, at 744, in its first home tournament in four years.
Northwestern golfers Luke Donald and Josh Habig put the Wildcats at the top of the standings after two rounds with a team total of 726 on the 7,0003-yard, par 72 course. The pair are in a tie for first place at 141. Donald fired a first round 69 followed by a 72 and Habig shot a 71 in the first and a two-under 70 in the second.
Oregon and BYU are three strokes back in the team standings, in a tie for second at 729. Stanford's Dusty Brett, who prepped at Bellarmine High in Tacoma, fired the low round of the day with a 68 in the morning outing.
Rashell, who won the 1997 Washington State Amateur on the same course, carded an even par 72 in his first round and came back with a two-under 70 in the second. Freshman Gordy Scutt made an impressive collegiate debut as he shot a 73 and then fired a 70 to finish at 143 and in a tie for sixth place.
"Rob is playing and behaving like a team captain, a senior and someone who is earning the respect of his teammates and peers," UW coach O.D. Vincent said. "He feels comfortable on this course and feels he can win this tournament.
"Gordy Scutt's debut as a collegegiate player was as good as we could possibly have hoped for," Vincent continued. "He has all the skills and abilities to be a great college player. I can't wait to watch him again on the final round.
"We are overwhelmed at the success of this tournament," said Vincent. "This is a strong field and that means good scores. If you have an off day, which we did, you are going to fall quickly. All the scores are close and a lot can happen on the second day."
Final round play begins at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. The Huskies tee off beginning at 8:42 a.m.
