STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 5/7 Husky men's golf team, winners in two of their last three tournaments, are fourth after the first round of the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford Golf Course. Junior All-American Chris Williams, who shot 2-under 68, paced Washington on Friday and is tied for 7th after 18 holes completed.

As a team, Washington stayed consistent for the most part throughout the day. The Husky five are all within four shots of each other.

"It was just a ho-hum day," is how Husky Coach Matt Thurmond described the Huskies' round. "Not bad, not good. Nobody got hot or really got any birdie streaks going, but we avoided any really big mistakes and had an even par round."

"It feels like we haven't even started," he added.

Williams and Trevor Simsby each only had one bogey during the round. Charlie Hughes had four bogeys, but countered them with a team-high four birdies. Cory McElyea had two birdies, one bogey and the only double-bogey among Huskies. Cheng-Tsung Pan was 2-over for the day with four bogeys and two birdies.

Despite feeling under the weather, Williams was able to come out and shoot a 68. The world's No. 6 rated amateur player had only 23 putts on the round, which is not his typical formula for shooting low.

"Willie is known for his tremendous ball striking," Thurmond said. "Today he didn't feel very well and didn't hit the ball very well at all, but he still shot 2-under. It was a pretty incredible round for him."

Hughes is tied for 18th after shooting even par at the par-70, 6,742-yard course. McElyea and Simsby each shot 71 and are tied for 25th. Pan was +2 on the day and is tied for 37th.

Oregon shot 272 (-8) to jump out to a five-shot lead after the first round in the 17 team field. UCLA is second after firing 3-under 277.

USC shot 1-under 279 and leads the Huskies by one stroke.

Nevada is fifth, two shots behind Washington.

Rufie Fessler of Fresno State shot 5-under 65 and leads three golfers by one shot.
