Flood and Polk Named Student-Athletes of the Week
Oct. 31, 2011
Sophomore Katie Flood and redshirt junior Chris Polk have been named the Gohuskies.com Student Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 24-30. This is the second such honor for Flood this season and the third for the cross-country team. This is also Polk's second such honor this season and third for the football team.
Polk (Redlands, Calif.) became the first Husky in 15 years to rush for four touchdowns in a game in the 42-31 victory over Arizona. He ran 34 times for 144 yards, his UW record-setting 18th career 100-yard game. He joined Corey Dillon (1996) and Hugh McElhenny (1950) as the only non-quarterbacks in the last 90 years of Husky football to score five touchdowns in a game.
He also became the first Husky to gain 100 rushing yards and 100 yards receiving in the same game. He became the first UW running back since Richard Thomas in 1994 with 100 yards receiving in a game and joined Napoleon Kaufman as the only Husky to rush for 1,000 yards in three different seasons.
He also received this honor for the week of Sept. 26 - Oct. 2 after rushing for 189 yards in the 31-14 victory at new Pac-12 opponent, Utah.
Flood (Des Moines, Iowa) became the first ever Pac-12 Women's Cross Country Champion, leading the second-ranked Husky women's team to a second-place finish in Litchfield Park, Ariz. After being named the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year last season, she became just the third individual conference champion in Washington history.
Her winning time of 19-minutes, 32 seconds over the 6,000-meter course is the second-fastest winning time in conference history for that distance, second only to former Husky Kendra Schaaf's win in 2008.
She was also named co-Student-Athlete of the Week earlier this month for her seventh-place finish at the Adidas Wisconsin Invitational, leading the then-24th ranked Huskies to victory. She was also the youngest runner to finish in the top-10, as five of the top six were seniors.
Other nominees include Jaclyn Softli (women's soccer), Jacob Hustedt (men's soccer), Cheng-Tsung Pan (men's golf), Joey Bywater (men's cross-country), Gabbi Parker (volleyball).
