Huskies Open Fall Football Camp at Evergreen State College
Aug. 12, 2000 Olympia - The Washington football team held its first full practice at Evergreen State College in Olympia on Saturday. It marked the first time the returning varsity players were paired up with the 24 Husky newcomers. Second-year coach Rick Neuheisel split the squad for a pair of morning workouts. The entire team practiced as one unit for over two hours in the afternoon. "It was a good start," Neuheisel told members of the media after the first day of practice. "There was a lot of nervous energy out there today. As we settle down I think we'll improve rapidly. At least that's my hope." Washington will practice at Evergreen State College through Aug. 19 when the team will hold its first scrimmage of the fall. The team's first day of pads practice will come on Wednesday. The team returns to Seattle following the scrimmage and will take the 20th off before resuming practice on Aug. 21 in Husky Stadium. Washington opens its 2000 season on Sept. 2 against Idaho at 12:30 p.m. in Husky Stadium. Notes from Day 1
Vontoure Absent "We have to draw a line and make kids understand they must do what they need to do as students to be able to perform as athletes," Neuheisel said.
Position Moves Adam Seery, a redshirt freshman, worked with the Washington safeties. He was used as a backup quarterback during spring drills. Lenny Haynes, a junior, who has played roverback, cornerback and safety, was moved to wide receiver where the Huskies are down in numbers due to a knee injury to starter Chris Juergens. Ken Walker, a junior, has moved back to fullback from inside linebacker. He played the position sparingly as a sophomore. Riah Martin, a junior, has moved from tailback to cornerback. Mike Rogers, a junior from Tacoma, did not report for camp.
