Jake Locker Q & A
June 9, 2009
Husky quarterback Jake Locker wrapped up his spring quarter with his last final of the school year today. Before he headed home for a few days with his family, he took a few minutes to speak with gohuskies.com about his trip to Oklahoma City last week for the Women's College World Series (where he watched the Huskies win the softball national title) and summer football workouts:
gohuskies.com: Tell us how your trip to the Women's College World Series came about.
Locker: I talked to Lauren [Greer] about it. I'd said from the beginning that if they made it, I'd go. And they made it. I had to be a man of my word. Man, I'm glad I did. It was a great experience.
gohuskies.com: Did you make it to Oklahoma City in time to see every game?
Locker: I missed the first game [the UW's 3-1 win over Georgia]. I made it just in time for the Friday game [a win over ASU] and was there from then on.
gohuskies.com: Did you go on your own, or did you bring along some friends or someone?
Locker: I went by myself. But some of the other boyfriends were there, and Lauren's family was there. I knew some people. It was a great time.
gohuskies.com: We've seen in the news that you had to call back to your coaches in Seattle to make sure it was okay to stay in Oklahoma City for the championship-round games on Monday and Tuesday. Is that how it went?
Locker: After the marathon Sunday games, I called and said there's no way I can come back now. I have to be here. Luckily, they let me stick around.
gohuskies.com: Now that you're done with finals, what next in terms of football.
Locker: We have this week off for finals, and then next week we come back and start our summer workouts Monday. We'll get the guys back here and make sure they're here all summer and doing what needs to be done.
gohuskies.com: As a team leader and as a quarterback, do you feel like you have a responsibility for organizing the off-season workouts?
Locker: Yeah, there are leaders on offense and on defense. It's our job to hold everyone accountable on each side of the ball and make sure people are there.
gohuskies.com: What sort of things are you looking to accomplish during the summer?
Locker: Just become more comfortable with offense. You know, it's still a new offense, a new system. It's a new defense for that matter. So all the guys getting comfortable with it and having confidence and getting better is what it's all about.
