UW Awarded Green Grant For Football Game-Day
Jan. 12, 2012
SEATTLE - In partnership with the Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Office, the UW department of Intercollegiate Athletics was awarded a $3,500 grant to be used toward the reduction of game-day waste at Husky football games. The grant was one of 10 offered under the GLAD® One Bag College Waste Diversion Grant program. "We are honored to receive the grant, and excited to get to work in planning for the 2012 football season," UW Assistant Athletic Director for Sport Operations Karen Baebler said. "These funds will allow us to partner with individuals who can apply specific expertise to our situation, and we anticipate significant results." The department has broken ground on a $250 million renovation of Husky Stadium, which presents a unique opportunity to change university culture around game-day waste. The grant funding will be used to hire an environmental consultant to create waste diversion strategies during the Huskies' 2012 home season at CenturyLink Field, and assist the department in introducing new initiatives into the planning and opening of the newly-renovated Husky Stadium in 2013. |
