Washington Huskies 21, San Diego State Aztecs 12 Washington improved to 2-1 at CenturyLink Field. The Huskies defeated Washington State 38-21 in the 2011 Apple Cup, and lost 20-17 to Air Force in a 2005 "road" game. Since 1989, Washington is 8-1 is season openers at home, and 13-10 in season openers overall. Under Steve Sarkisian, the Huskies are 3-1 in home openers. The Huskies are now 3-0 against the Aztecs and 13-8 against current Mountain West Conference members. Keith Price completed 25-35 passes. It was the first time a UW quarterback has completed 25 passes in a game since Jake Locker completed 25 against LSU in 2009. The 12 points the UW defense allowed is the fewest since the 2010 Holiday Bowl, when the Huskies stifled Nebraska in a 19-7 win. Tre Watson's interception of SDSU quarterback Ryan Katz was the first time the Huskies earned a turnover on their opponents' first possession since recovering a fumble on Hawai'i's opening drive, Sept. 10, 2011. The Huskies recovered Aztec fumbles on consecutive possessions, halting back-to-back SDSU drives in the third quarter. The last time Washington forced and recovered fumbles on consecutive possessions was on Dec. 5 of 2009 in 42-10 win over Cal. After missing on his first pass attempt, Keith Price completed his next 13 passes, including an eight-yard strike to Kasen Williams to put the Huskies up 14-0. Coach Sarkisian started two true freshmen, Jaydon Mickens at wide receiver and Shaq Thompson at defensive back. True freshmen Kendyl Taylor, Pio Vatuvei, Korey Durkee and Eric Wilson II also made it onto the field for the collegiate debuts. Husky underclassmen played a huge role in the game, including:
Will Shamburger's 44-yard fumble return for touchdown was the Huskies' first since Jamaal Kearse scored on a fumble recovery against Utah, Oct. 1, 2011. |
