Steve Fex returns the Washington coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach in 2001. In his 13 years of coaching at the high school and collegiate levels, Fex has repeatedly demonstrated his versatility and knowledge of the game, coaching multiple positions on both offense and defense, as well as on special teams. At Washington, he assists with the outside (SAM) linebackers.
Fex worked most recently as a high school coach in Texas. From 1996-99 he coached the secondary and special teams at Houston's North Shore High School, having held the same positions at South Houston High School in 1995. In five and a half years at North Shore, 52 players went on to earn football scholarships, including more than 30 in Division I programs. Fex began his coaching career in Texas at El Paso's Irvin High School from 1993-95.
After graduating from Western Oregon University in 1985, Fex worked as a student assistant coach from 1985-87. In 1988, Fex head-coached Regis High School to a Oregon Class A State Championship, before returning to Western Oregon in 1991 to coach the offensive line. Fex switched sides of the ball in 1992, coaching the linebackers and special teams for the next two seasons.
Fex and his wife, Colleen, have two sons, Joe (3) and Jake (1).
