Tony Alford
Tony Alford, the lone new addition to the Husky coaching staff in 2001, enters his first season as Washington’s running backs coach. Alford brings a lengthy and impressive resume as both a player and a coach. Alford spent the last four seasons as running backs coach at Iowa State, working under head coach Dan McCarney. Alford played a major role in turning around the Cyclones’ running game from one of the worst in the nation to one of the best. When Alford arrived at ISU, the Cyclones ranked 103rd in the nation in rushing. The last two seasons, Iowa State averaged more than 200 yards per game, finishing 17th in the nation both seasons. The 2000 Iowa State squad posted a 9-3 record and beat Pittsburgh, 37-29, in the Insight.com Bowl, Iowa State’s first-ever bowl victory. The team rushed for 2,288 yards and scored 27 rushing touchdowns during the season. In 1999, the Cyclones rushed for 2,205 yards and 23 TDs. Alford tutored a pair of standout runners in Darren Davis and Ennis Haywood. Davis rushed for 1,000 or more yards in each of his three seasons under Alford (1997-99) and finished his career second on the school’s all-time rushing list. Haywood finished 10th in the nation last season, rushing for 123.7 yards per game. Alford was an All-Western Athletic Conference running back and a Doak Walker Award nominee at Colorado State. He graduated from CSU with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science in 1992. As a Ram, Alford set the WAC single-game rushing record when he went for 310 yards against Utah. Following his college career, Alford played briefly for the Denver Broncos and for the Birmingham (Ala.) Fire in the World Football League. After serving as an assistant coach at the high school level in Fort Collins, Colo., and Lake Wales, Fla., Alford was hired as running backs coach at Division III powerhouse Mt. Union College (Alliance, Ohio) in 1995. He helped the Raiders to a 12-1 mark and to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championship. In 1996, he worked as the running backs coach at Kent. Alford's wife is named Trina.
