National Champion Huskies Looking For Walk-On Rowers
Sept. 11, 2012
SEATTLE - The Washington men's and women's crew teams are looking for walk-on rowers to join the squad in the fall. No previous rowing experience is necessary.
The Huskies have a storied tradition of walk-ons contributing and ascending to great heights within the program. In the last three years, the Huskies developed walk-ons who have rowed in the freshman eight, varsity four and junior varsity boat on the men's side that won several Pac-12 and National Championship titles. On the women's side, walk-ons made it into the varsity squad and developed to strong and successful rowers beyond their college careers - a path of success none of the athletes expected before joining the team.
Rising senior Ryan Schroeder joined the team as a walk-on. Schroeder, a baseball player in high school, has won three consecutive gold medals at the IRA National Championships. And this past summer Ryan won a gold medal in the US Men's 8+ competing at the Under-23 World Championships in Trakai, Lithuania.
Adrienne Martelli and Megan Kalmoe are two Husky walk-ons that developed into world-class rowers. Martelli and Kalmoe won a bronze medal in the women's quad at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, for the United States of America.
Schroeder, Martelli and Kalmoe are not the only walk-ons that are successful at Washington. Each year, the team reaches out to recruit on-campus to give students the chance to try out and to earn a spot on the country's national championship winning team.
For students interested in learning more, Husky rowers will be meeting prospective walk-ons at Lander and Haggett Hall on Monday, September 24th at 3:30 p.m., and they will accompany them to Conibear Shellhouse for an informational meeting which starts at 4pm.
Students who plan on trying out for the team should click on the "Necessary Tryout Forms" link above. Once you have been taken to the Husky Athletic Training Room site, you will click on either the "Freshmen Men" or "Freshmen Women" tab and complete the corresponding forms. Students must bring their completed tryout form along with their insurance card to the first official practice on Tuesday, September 25th.
