May 2, 1998 SEATTLE - The Washington mens varsity crew avenged a 1997 loss when it won the 12th annual Windermere Cup, defeating the Nottinghamshire County Rowing Association on Montlake Cut during Opening Day festivities Saturday. The British crew handed the Huskies their lone loss of the 1997 season, at the Henley Royal Regatta in England last July, in a race that was decided by a one-foot margin. This time, Washington covered the 2,000-meter course in a time of five minutes, 57.40 seconds to win in open water. NCRA finished at 6:03.66. It was the eighth-straight Windermere Cup victory for the Husky varsity. On the womens side, UW suffered its first Opening Day defeat in seven years. The British National Team, made up of several rowers who won bronze medals at the 1997 World Championships, crossed the finish line in a time of 6:37.22, about two boat lengths ahead of the Huskies at 6:48.48. Virginia was third in the race at 6:51.28. The mens Cascade Cup provided the closest race of the day, as a second heavyweight crew from Nottinghamshire edged the junior varsity Huskies, 5:55.40 to 5:56.17. The Washington womens junior varsity won its eighth consecutive Cascade Cup, in a time of 7:04.68, ahead of Gonzaga, Pacific Lutheran and Western Washington. In a new event this year, the United States mens and womens national teams faced the Canadian National teams in the Windermere Challenge Cup, with the US easily winning both races. The women were clocked in 6:35.03, ahead of Canada at 6:45.30. The US men came in at 5:57.07, while Canada finished in 6:04.43.

That is a big part of what the Windermere Cup is, is to bring the best competition in the world to Seattle. I thought it was neat that someone was ahead of us and we came back through. They were a half to a third boat length ahead of us early on. The Notts guys really rowed high all the way down the course. They wanted to get ahead at any price. Our guys were able to stabilize and get through. The margin was lengthened in the second half of the race. The main thing about today is that we want to get the best rowers in the world to come to Seattle and compete. Everybody is going to be challenged. Washington next travels to Oregon State for a dual meet, Sat., May 9 at Lake Vancouver. Racing begins at 10 a.m.
