Husky Hoops Share Thanksgiving Thoughts
Nov. 21, 2012
We surveyed several of the Huskies and asked them to share their Thanksgiving memories and traditions - and of course favorite foods from the holiday. Here are some of their entertaining answers.
Aziz N'Diaye - Senior, Center (Dakar, Senegal) This year I am hanging out here. I plan on going to my girlfriend's house with her family. We'll have dinner and hang out. I will have a little bit of turkey. Some of the dark meat, but just a little bit. I will still eat turkey but I just won't eat a lot. Since that first Thanksgiving if I eat to much of it makes me sick, so I just eat a little bit.
Usually I'm just staying home and spending time with my family. The best thing about it is just spending time with my family. My step-dad will usually watch football, but I probably will just hang around with my little cousins of nephew and play some video games. I'm a big eater so I like everything. Probably my favorite things are the ham, cranberries and turkey. We have both ham and turkey.
My family tradition is we either go to my auntie's house and a lot of my family go there, or sometimes we just stay at home and have a few people over at my mom's house and we eat there. We're all just hanging around watching football; basketball games if they're on. We are just chilling watching sports, maybe a movie. It's just a really relaxed atmosphere. My favorite food is my uncle's barbequed turkey. He smokes it all day and it's amazing. It is a must. After he puts it on the grill, you don't have to put much on it. It's one of those things that you can eat it just how it is. My mom is coming up this year and is going to cook at my apartment for a few of us. I'm sure they'll enjoy it.
My first Thanksgiving was in 2010. I had a nice dinner at the St. John's Military Academy. Last year I had dinner with (manager) Matt McKay's family. This year I am going to (manager) Brad's grandma's house. If I get the choice between chicken and turkey, I'd say I prefer chicken. But, since Thanksgiving is about turkey I will eat it. I would not say I don't like it, I would say I just prefer other things over turkey. My favorite food from Thanksgiving is the turkey, though because I'm not used to eating it. I also like the stuffing and potatoes.
No. 1 is just being around family. Family is the most important thing to me. All the food - of course - the home-cooked food that everybody brings and all share and gather around. My favorite food at Thanksgiving is gumbo. It's a southern tradition. We add turkey and smoked ham into it. There's also the turkey, ham and cornbread dressing, collared green, macaroni and cheese and pies. We have a pretty big family and we always celebrate at my grandfather's house.
I probably first heard about Thanksgiving once I got here. In Belgium I didn't think about it. When I found out what it was I was pretty excited about it because it's pretty much about eating food throughout the whole day and I love eating, so I like the holiday. In 2010 was the first time I celebrated Thanksgiving. In 2009 I was away at a basketball tournament, so 2010 was the first time I celebrated it. My favorite part is pretty much the regular fare: turkey with gravy and mashed potatoes. Turkey is not as popular in Belgium as it is here.
Everybody comes over to my house and my grandma and mom cook dinner. My favorite part is just chilling with my siblings, just because I'm not home that much. So I really just hanging out and enjoying their company. Usually there is about 10-12 people around. We watch a lot of football. My favorite food at Thanksgiving is probably candied yams or sweet potato pie. I must have sweet potato pie.
We have a bunch family in the area so we usually rotate going to cousins, grandparents or our house. I think we might be having it at our house this year...I'm not really sure. All the guys watch football and then we eat and catch up with each other. My favorite food has got to be the mashed potatoes for sure. No gravy either. I'm kind of just a butter and mashed potatoes guy.
Everybody comes over to our house and brings their own meals. We just hang out and play card games. My favorite food are the ham and rolls. Leftovers are always a key. This year Desmond's mom is driving up here and she'll cook for us.
My mom usually cooks something. She'll cook turkey or sometimes we'll mix it up and she will cook chicken. But you know what, I'm not that big of a fan of turkey. I'd probably rather just eat some ribs. Sometimes we DO mix it up and have barbeque on Thanksgiving. |
