WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Huskies Jon Brockman and Ashley Charters were named Pac-10 Tom Hansen Conference Medal winners, as announced Wednesday by Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen. Conference Medals are awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership. The Pac-10 recently renamed the award the Tom Hansen Conference Medal in honor of Hansen, who is retiring at the end of June after serving 26 years as Commissioner of the Pac-10 conference.
Brockman (Snohomish, Wash.) led the Husky men's basketball team to a 26-9 record and Washington's first outright Pac-10 title in 56 years. A two-time All-Pac-10 selection, Brockman led the Huskies in rebounding four straight seasons and ranked seventh nationally in that category in 2008-09. Brockman completed his collegiate career with 1,805 points (13.8 ppg) and 1,283 rebounds (9.8 rpg) and graduates as the UW's all-time career leader in rebounds and as the Huskies' second-leading scorer. He is the first Husky and only the fourth player in Pac-10 history to surpass 1,800 career points and 1,200 rebounds. Brockman was also named the Chip Hilton Player of the Year Award recipient, given annually to the nation's top player demonstrating outstanding character, leadership and talent. Brockman is an architectural studies/construction management major. Charters (Beaverton, Ore.), a three-time All-American infielder, helped lead the Huskies (51-12) to their first Women's College World Series title, defeating Florida for the title. Charters was one of 41 players nationally to be invited to the USA National Team selection camp and leaves Washington as the all-time career leader in stolen bases (133) and tied for the record in triples (16). She also ranked No. 2 all-time in runs (215) and hits (315). Charters is a sociology major, with a minor in education, learning and society and carries a 3.05 GPA.
