Seattle - Sophomore guard Senque Carey is leaving the University of Washington men's basketball team and will transfer to another school, coach Bob Bender announced today.

The 6-4, 210-pound point guard started 29 of 30 games for the Huskies during the 1999-2000 season, averaging 10.4 points and 4.6 assists per outing. Carey was Washington's second leading scorer and his assist total ranked as the fourth-highest single-season mark in Husky history. He recorded his career high in scoring with 27 points in a game at Old Dominion that included a seven-for-seven performance from the three-point area.

As a freshman in 1998-99, Carey averaged 8.7 points per game. He was named to the Pac-10 Conference's all-freshman team.

"My decision to transfer is for personal reasons. Basically, I would like to play somewhere that allows me to be closer to home," said Carey, a native of East Palo Alto, Calif. "I want to wish my teammates the best. I also want to express my thanks to coach Bender and his staff for the opportunities they presented me at Washington."

"We wish Senque nothing but the best and I certainly understand his feelings of wanting to be closer to home," said Husky coach Bob Bender. "It will be a difficult challenge to replace someone of his ability. However, the team is looking forward to rebounding from a difficult season last year. Senque has been a young man who we have enjoyed working with and have watched him grow as both a player and a person. I'm confident that he will continue to develop in both of those directions."

Go Huskies!
