Seattle Sports Commission to Honor Former Huskies

SEATTLE, WA - January 16, 2012 - The Seattle Sports Commission (SSC) has announced recipients of several awards, which will be presented at the 77th Annual Sports Star of the Year, presented by ROOT Sports. On January 25, 2012 at Benaroya Hall, honorees will be recognized for their significant impact in our community, and are selected by the Sports Star Committee. Among those to be honored are former Husky basketball legends Detlef Schrempf and Bob Houbregs. Sports Citizen of the Year: Detlef Schrempf, UW Basketball/Seattle SuperSonics Royal Brougham Legend Award: Bob Houbregs, UW Basketball In addition to the honors given to Houbregs and Schrempf, several other Huskies have been nominated for awards. Current or former UW student-athletes account for a majority of the Male Sports Star of the Year category, with Chris Williams (men's golf), Isaiah Thomas (men's basketball) and Chris Polk (football) all receiving nominations. Former Husky softball standout Jenn Salling was nominated in the Female Sports Star of the Year category, and UW men's crew's third national title in five years was featured in the Sports Story of the Year category.
