SEATTLE -- University of Washington men's basketball coach Lorenzo Romar announced sophomore Abdul Gaddy will miss the remainder of the 2011 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during practice on Tuesday.

"First and foremost, this is a big blow for Abdul Gaddy," said Romar. "Sometimes in team sports we tend to say, `look at the whole team.' Forget the team now. This is a blow for Abdul Gaddy."

Gaddy sustained the injury when he planted his left leg while driving to the basket during Tuesday's practice.

"He was playing very well for us and he loves to play the game. He worked extremely hard to work on his game this summer. For this to happen, it's a big blow for him," said Romar. "To a lesser extent, it's a big blow for our team - he was our starting point guard."

Gaddy will undergo surgery in the next couple of weeks. Typical recovery time from ACL surgery is six-to-nine months.

Gaddy, from Tacoma's Bellarmine Prep, was leading the Pac-10 in assist to turnover ratio at 3.1 (49 assists/16 turnovers). His 3.8 assists per game was the seventh best average in the Pac-10 Conference and he also ranked ninth in three-point shooting percentage (40.6%).

A starter in all 13 games, Gaddy raised his scoring average to 8.5 points per game, up from 3.9 ppg as a freshman. Overall, Gaddy has played in 49 games, 42 starts - 41 of which have come consecutively.
