SEATTLE -Todd MacCulloch, who sat on the bench much of the second half because he was in foul trouble, swatted away a layup attempt by Brandon Granville in the final second as the Washington Huskies escaped with an 85-83 victory over Southern California Thursday night.

The Huskies led 84-77 with 1:52 to go after freshman Senque Carey's driving layup, but Elias Ayuso brought the Trojans back with 3-pointers with 1:36 and 1:04 to go.

That cut Washington's lead to 84-83. With 22 seconds on the clock, the Huskies' Chris Walcott missed a 12-footer and USC's Sam Clancy rebounded.

After a Trojans' timeout with 17 seconds left, Adam Spanich of USC appeared to attempt to pass inside, but MacCulloch grabbed the ball before being fouled by Brian Scalabrine with 6.6 seconds left.

MacCulloch, who played just seven minutes in the second half, made his first free throw attempt, but missed his second.

Granville then drove the middle in an attempt to tie the game with a layup, but MacCulloch blocked his shot out of bounds. Granville made an inbounds pass, but USC couldn't get another shot off.

Washington (11-7, 4-4 Pac-10) was led by Carey's 19 points, 18 by Deon Luton and MacCulloch's 17.

The Trojans (10-7, 2-6) got 23 points from Spanich and 19 from Ayuso. Spanich had four 3-pointers and Ayuso had five from behind the arc.

The Huskies were ahead 42-39 at halftime and led 51-47 when MacCulloch committed his third foul with 4:20 gone and had to go to the bench. By the time the 7-foot senior from Canada returned, Washington's lead was 82-75. But MacCulloch had to go right back to the bench after picking up his fourth foul with 2:11 on the clock.

Washington's biggest lead was 13 points - at 74-61 - after a bank shot by Thalo Green with 7:07 left.

USC's two Washington state products - Scalabrine and Quincy Wilder - struggled. Scalabrine had nine points on 3-for-9 shooting, while Wilder, who started at point guard, was held to a single point on 0-for-4 shooting.
