First Award Arrives Early For Lincecum
Nov. 18, 2004
Washington sophomore pitcher Tim Lincecum has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association 2005 preseason All-America first-team, the NCBWA announced today.
Lincecum, a right-hander from Liberty High in Renton, Wash., was named the Pac-10's Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year last season, when he became the first freshman to lead the Pac-10 in strikeouts since 1978. His 161 strikeouts were a new school record and ranked him No. 2 in the nation behind Long Beach State's Jered Weaver. Lincecum finished the 2004 season with a 10-3 record and a 3.53 earned run average.
Lincecum was one of four starting pitchers named the NCBWA's first team and one of three players from the Pac-10 so honored, joining first baseman John Mayberry and second baseman Jed Lowrie, both from Stanford. Gonzaga catcher Kiel Thibault also made the first team.
Alongside UC Irvine reliever Blair Erickson, Lincecum was one of only two sophomores to make the team. The NCBWA also named a second and third team, but no other Huskies were selected.
