SEATTLE - The Purple team won the first game of the UW baseball team's annual "Fall World Series" Wed., Oct. 17, at Husky Ballpark. The Purple beat the Gold, 5-0, in the first of a five-game series.

Four pitchers -- Elliott Cribby, Jacob Clem, Tyler Cheney and Ben Guidos -- combined on the shutout. Cheney, who was the pitcher when the fifth inning ended, picked up the win. Cribby started and allowed two hits over 3.0 innings. Clem and Guidos each threw one inning and Cheney struck out three in two hitless innings.

The Purple scored two runs in the third to take a lead they'd never lose. Freshman shortstop David Bentrott led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on single from second baseman Doug Cherry, who came in to score on a single from freshman first baseman Troy Scott.

In the fifth, senior Michael Burgher walked, stole second and scored on a Cherry single. In the sixth, Matt Stevens and Jarett Jackson both singled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Sean Meehan and a single from Bentrott.

The Gold squad was limited to just three hits, singles from Julien Pollard, Brock Gates and Kyle Conley.

The series is scheduled to continue today (Thu., Oct. 18) with game two, starting at 3:00 p.m. Games three, four and five are slated for next Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, all at 3:00 p.m. at Husky Ballpark. Fans are welcome and admission is free.
