Afenir Drives In Two As Purple Edges Gold, 2-1
Oct. 17, 2012
SEATTLE - Solid pitching was the name of the game as the Washington baseball team capped its fall practice season with the Purple and Gold intrasquad game Wednesday at Husky Ballpark. Offensively, senior shortstop Ty Afenir led the way for the victorious Purple team, providing both RBI in a 2-1 win. His two-out single in the bottom of the eighth broke a 1-1 tie. Purple reliever Tyler Davis threw two innings, allowing no runs on one hit, for the win. Freshman Alex Nesbitt recorded the final out in the ninth to earn the save. Brian Wolfe, a junior outfielder who missed the 2012 season while recovering from injury, broke a scoreless tie when he led of the Gold half of the fourth inning with a solo homer to right field. In the bottom of the fifth, the Purple squad drew even. Freshman Duncan Hendrickson led off with a single and, after taking second on a groundout, he scored when Afenir lined a single to left-center, tying the score at 1-1. Hendrickson and Afenir were the only two players for either squad with more than one hit, each finishing 2-for-3. With the game in the books, the Huskies have essentially wrapped up their fall practice season. They'll return to formal practices next spring and open the 2013 season in February.
