Baseball Edges Portland, 2-1
May 4, 1999
SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team scored a run on an error in the bottom of the ninth to beat Portland, 2-1, Tuesday night in a non-conference game at Husky Ballpark.
In the ninth, right fielder Daniel Jahn led off with a single off of reliever Zach Yarbrough (0-2). Pinch runner Dwight Demar moved to second on a wild pitch before UW second baseman Brent Robertson bounced a grounder to short. Pilot shortstop Cory Lunde threw to third to try and get DeMar, but the throw went into the dugout, allowing the DeMar to come home with the winning run.
UW freshman Taylor Grant (1-0) earned his first career win with one and two-thirds innings of relief. He allowed a hit and fanned two. Yarbrough suffered the loss. Washington improved to 29-15 while Portland dropped to 20-23.
The teams traded solo home runs in the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, UW senior Bryan Williamson belted his eighth of the season, and in the top of the second, Portlands Steve Jackson hit his sixth.
The score remained 1-1 throughout most of the game. Both team had good chances. In the sixth, the Pilots had runners at second and third with no outs and couldnt score. In the eighth, UW designated hitter Dominic Woody hit a double off the top of the fence, went to third with one out, but a lineout and a popout ended the threat.
Husky starter Matt Hampton got no decision despite a strong outing. The senior worked six innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out six.
The Huskies and Pilots close out the short, two-game series Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
