April 10, 2000
SEATTLE - University of Washington pitcher Jeff Carlsen, along with Arizona State's Jon Switzer, has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced today. Stanford third baseman John Gall won the Player of the Week award.
Last Friday, Carlsen, a right-hander from Poulsbo, Wash., out-dueled Arizona ace Ben Diggins, breaking Diggins' eight-game winning streak as the Huskies prevailed, 3-2. Carlsen threw a complete-game four-hitter, allowing two runs and only one walk while striking out seven.
With the victory, the 6-foot-7 ace improved to 5-1 on the season and 21-5 over his three- year career. He currently sits fifth on the UW career wins chart, six short of Mike Smith's UW record of 27.
The pitcher of the week honor was the second of his career.
Switzer shut out Oregon State last weekend, throwing a six-hit complete game and fanning 10. Gall went 12-for-18 (.667) with three homers and 11 RBI in four Stanford wins last week.
